ISLAMABAD, Thursday, May 14, 2026 (WNP): Chairman Senate Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani on Thursday said Pakistan–Azerbaijan relations are rooted in deep religious, cultural, historical, and people-to-people bonds, describing the two countries as “brotherly nations” that have consistently supported each other in times of need.

He was addressing a ceremony marking Azerbaijan’s Independence Day, attended by the Ambassador of Azerbaijan, federal minister Abdul Aleem Khan, parliamentary leaders, and diplomats.

Gilani extended congratulations to the leadership and people of Azerbaijan, noting that both nations have always shared mutual solidarity. He recalled that Azerbaijan warmly celebrated Pakistan’s success during recent tensions with India, reflecting strong emotional ties between the two peoples.

The Senate Chairman highlighted frequent high-level exchanges with Azerbaijani leadership, stressing close coordination in international forums including the Inter-Parliamentary Union and Asian Parliamentary Assembly.

He welcomed Azerbaijan’s development initiatives in Islamabad and appreciated the declaration of the “Year of Architecture.”

Gilani also underscored expanding connectivity, noting 11 weekly flights between Pakistan and Azerbaijan, enabling travel in under three hours and boosting tourism and trade.

Referring to historical linkages, he cited the Multani Caravanserai in Baku as a symbol of centuries-old trade ties via the Silk Route, recognized by UNESCO for its heritage value.

Concluding his remarks, he reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and raised the slogan: “Long Live Pakistan–Azerbaijan Friendship.”
