TEHRAN: Seyed Mojtaba Khamenei has been elected as the third Supreme Leader of Iran, following the death of his father, Ali Khamenei, marking a historic and controversial leadership transition during a period of intense regional conflict.<\/p>\n
The decision was announced by the Assembly of Experts, an 88-member clerical body responsible under Iran\u2019s constitution for selecting the country\u2019s supreme leader.<\/p>\n

Born in the northeastern city of Mashhad, he studied Islamic theology in the seminaries of Qom and maintained close ties with conservative clerics and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).<\/p>\n
