{"id":4719,"date":"2025-05-09T10:18:54","date_gmt":"2025-05-09T10:18:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wnp.com.pk\/?p=4719"},"modified":"2025-05-09T10:18:54","modified_gmt":"2025-05-09T10:18:54","slug":"imf-greenlights-1-bln-tranche-as-pm-shehbaz-slams-indias-failed-tactics-to-derail-economic-recovery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thediplomat.com.pk\/index.php\/2025\/05\/09\/imf-greenlights-1-bln-tranche-as-pm-shehbaz-slams-indias-failed-tactics-to-derail-economic-recovery\/","title":{"rendered":"IMF greenlights $1 bln tranche as PM Shehbaz slams India\u2019s &#8216;failed tactics&#8217; to derail economic recovery"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>ISLAMABAD, Friday, May 09, 2025 : Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Friday welcomed the International Monetary Fund\u2019s (IMF) approval of a critical $1 billion tranche for Pakistan, describing it as a testament to the country\u2019s economic resilience and dismissing what he termed India\u2019s \u201cfailed underhanded tactics\u201d to sabotage the programme.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement issued by the Prime Minister\u2019s Office, Shehbaz expressed satisfaction over the disbursement, lauding Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, Finance Secretary Imdadullah Bosal, and the broader economic team for successfully steering negotiations with the IMF.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy the grace of Allah, Pakistan\u2019s economic situation is improving, and the country is steadily moving towards progress,\u201d the prime minister said.<\/p>\n<p>He accused India of attempting to derail Pakistan\u2019s economic revival through \u201cmalicious propaganda and unilateral aggression\u201d aimed at distracting global attention from Pakistan\u2019s development efforts. \u201cIndia\u2019s desperate moves to sabotage the IMF program have failed,\u201d he asserted, adding that international financial institutions had \u201cfirmly rejected\u201d India\u2019s narrative.<\/p>\n<p>The IMF approval, the prime minister said, would help stabilize the economy and set Pakistan on a path to long-term, sustainable growth. He reaffirmed the government\u2019s commitment to structural reforms, particularly in taxation, the energy sector, and private sector development.<\/p>\n<p>Shehbaz Sharif cited positive macroeconomic indicators over the past 14 months as evidence of policy effectiveness, including a significant 31% rise in workers\u2019 remittances. \u201cRemittances reached a record \\$31.2 billion from July 2024 to April 2025,\u201d he noted, crediting overseas Pakistanis for their continued confidence in the government\u2019s economic direction.<\/p>\n<p>Addressing a high-level meeting to review preparations for the upcoming federal budget 2025\u201326, the prime minister emphasized the government\u2019s priority to provide relief to the poor and middle class. \u201cAll-out efforts will be made to ease the financial burden on low- and middle-income groups,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He directed that the budget focus on sustainable, export-led growth and prioritize job creation, industrial development, agriculture, IT, small and medium enterprises (SMEs), and the housing sector.<\/p>\n<p>Public-private partnerships, youth vocational training, and digitization were highlighted as key levers of future growth. \u201cReforms in the power sector are yielding results,\u201d Shehbaz said, pointing to recent reductions in industrial electricity tariffs as a step toward boosting production and economic activity.<\/p>\n<p>He also announced plans to continue rightsizing the federal government to streamline governance and reduce public expenditure.<\/p>\n<p>The meeting was briefed that stakeholder consultations had been ongoing for the past three months, with active input from private sector representatives, experts, and industrial bodies.
