WASHINGTON, Monday, May 12, 2025 : U.S. President Donald J. Trump on Monday claimed his administration played a pivotal role in preventing a potential nuclear conflict between India and Pakistan, attributing the de-escalation to aggressive trade diplomacy.<\/p>\n
Speaking to reporters at the White House before departing on a Middle East tour, President Trump said that tensions between the two South Asian nuclear powers had reached a critical point, particularly following India\u2019s launch of military operation \u201cSindoor\u201d and Pakistan\u2019s forceful retaliation.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey were going at it hot and heavy, and it was seemingly not going to stop,\u201d Trump said, referring to the days leading up to the ceasefire announced on Saturday, which followed the deadly April 22 attack in Indian-occupied Pahalgam that killed 26 tourists.<\/p>\n
Trump recounted how he used the prospect of expanded trade as leverage to pressure both countries into backing down. \u201cI said, come on, we\u2019re going to do a lot of trade with you guys. Let\u2019s stop it. If you stop, we\u2019ll do trade. If you don\u2019t, we won\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cPeople have never really used trade the way I used it \u2014 that I can tell you,\u201d he added. \u201cAnd all of a sudden, they said, I think we\u2019re going to stop. And they have.\u201d<\/p>\n
President Trump emphasized that while several factors contributed to the ceasefire, trade was a key motivator. \u201cWe\u2019re going to do a lot of trade with Pakistan. We\u2019re going to do a lot of trade with India.\u201d<\/p>\n
Reflecting on the broader implications of the crisis, Trump asserted, \u201cWe stopped a nuclear conflict. I think it could have been a bad nuclear war. Millions of people could have been killed. So I\u2019m very proud of that.\u201d<\/p>\n
