ISLAMABAD, Friday, May 30, 2025 : A delegation from the European Union (EU), led by Jeroen Willems, EU Head of Cooperation in Pakistan, visited the Ministry of Human Rights (MoHR) and held a detailed meeting with Secretary Humera Ahmad to review ongoing collaboration and future priorities in the field of human rights.<\/p>\n
The delegation included Marta Szymczyk, Programme Manager for Human Rights and Democracy, while senior ministry officials Muhammad Arshad, Director General (International Cooperation), and Muhammad Arif Leghari, Director (IC), also participated in the discussions.<\/p>\n
Welcoming the delegation, Secretary Humera Ahmad acknowledged the EU\u2019s long-standing partnership and its support for Pakistan\u2019s efforts to advance human rights. She briefed the visitors on key legislative developments, including the National Commission for Minorities Act and the recently passed ICT Child Marriage Restraint Act 2025. She also highlighted the Prime Minister\u2019s Women Empowerment Package 2024 as a major initiative aimed at addressing gender inequality.<\/p>\n
The meeting also discussed the upcoming EU Monitoring Mission on GSP+ and the importance of sustained progress in human rights as a prerequisite for continued benefits under the scheme.<\/p>\n
Jeroen Willems appreciated Pakistan\u2019s progress and reaffirmed the EU\u2019s commitment to supporting reforms, particularly in areas related to the rights of minorities, women, children, and persons with disabilities. He encouraged further cooperation and lauded Pakistan\u2019s legislative and institutional efforts.<\/p>\n
Secretary Ahmad emphasized the ministry\u2019s focus on inclusivity and shared updates on reforms aimed at enhancing accessibility and mobility for persons with disabilities. She also noted the government\u2019s commitment to strengthening national institutions such as the National Commission for Human Rights (NCHR), National Commission on the Status of Women (NCSW), and National Commission on the Rights of Child (NCRC) in line with the Paris Principles.<\/p>\n
Both sides reviewed progress under the ongoing Huqooq-e-Pakistan II (HeP-II) project and agreed on the need for stronger coordination among stakeholders for effective implementation of the 2025 work plan.<\/p>\n
