{"id":5520,"date":"2025-06-16T11:29:29","date_gmt":"2025-06-16T11:29:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wnp.com.pk\/?p=5520"},"modified":"2025-06-16T11:29:29","modified_gmt":"2025-06-16T11:29:29","slug":"un-climate-chief-calls-for-pragmatic-action-unity-as-bonn-climate-meetings-open","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thediplomat.com.pk\/index.php\/2025\/06\/16\/un-climate-chief-calls-for-pragmatic-action-unity-as-bonn-climate-meetings-open\/","title":{"rendered":"UN climate chief opens Bonn talks with urgent call for unity, resources, &#038; real action to tackle global warming"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BONN, Monday, June 16, 2025 : UN Climate Change Executive Secretary Simon Stiell on Monday opened the 62nd session of the Subsidiary Bodies (SB62) in Bonn with a strong appeal for renewed multilateral cooperation, pragmatic resource allocation, and accelerated action to address the climate crisis.<\/p>\n<p>Addressing delegates, observers, and global stakeholders at the June Climate Meetings, Stiell underscored the significance of the negotiations taking place over the next 10 days, calling them critical to advancing tangible climate action that affects billions of people worldwide.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3>\u201cThis process matters deeply,\u201d Stiell said. \u201cThe progress you make in the next 10 days will make a very real difference to lives and livelihoods in every country.\u201d<\/h3>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>He praised recent Conferences of the Parties (COPs) for having delivered meaningful, albeit imperfect, outcomes, citing them as examples of \u201chuman solidarity in action.\u201d Without UN-led climate diplomacy, he warned, the world would be on a path to 5\u00b0C of global warming. Current trajectories, while still concerning, show a reduction to approximately 3\u00b0C.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>\u201cLet\u2019s not forget,\u201d he added, \u201cthat 1.5\u00b0C remains both achievable and essential. And it is this threshold that must guide our collective ambition.\u201d<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>Stiell acknowledged growing optimism as several of the world&#8217;s largest economies signal strong commitments to climate action, despite ongoing political and economic headwinds.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3>\u201cThe tide has turned. Climate action is now in every nation\u2019s interest \u2014 there is no turning back,\u201d he emphasized.<\/h3>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Turning to institutional matters, Stiell expressed concern over the resource constraints facing the UN Climate Change Secretariat.
