{"id":6496,"date":"2025-07-22T21:09:09","date_gmt":"2025-07-22T21:09:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wnp.com.pk\/?p=6496"},"modified":"2025-07-22T21:09:09","modified_gmt":"2025-07-22T21:09:09","slug":"un-security-council-unanimously-adopts-pakistan-sponsored-resolution-to-bolster-peaceful-dispute-settlement-mechanisms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thediplomat.com.pk\/index.php\/2025\/07\/22\/un-security-council-unanimously-adopts-pakistan-sponsored-resolution-to-bolster-peaceful-dispute-settlement-mechanisms\/","title":{"rendered":"UN Security Council unanimously adopts Pakistan-sponsored resolution to bolster peaceful dispute settlement mechanisms"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>UNITED NATIONS, Tuesday, July 22, 2025 : In a major diplomatic achievement, the United Nations Security Council on Tuesday unanimously adopted a Pakistan-sponsored resolution aimed at strengthening global mechanisms for the peaceful settlement of disputes.<\/p>\n<p>The landmark resolution was passed during a session chaired by Pakistan\u2019s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar, as part of Pakistan\u2019s presidency of the Security Council for the month of July.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The resolution \u2014 titled \u201cStrengthening Mechanisms for Peaceful Settlement of Disputes\u201d \u2014 reaffirms member states\u2019 commitment to the UN Charter, particularly Chapter VI, and calls for greater use of diplomatic tools such as mediation, arbitration, judicial settlement, and regional cooperation to prevent conflicts and promote sustainable peace.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Addressing the Council, Senator Dar emphasized the critical need to shift from a reactive to a preventive approach in international diplomacy. \u201cThe world cannot afford more wars; our collective responsibility lies in dialogue, not confrontation,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n<p>The resolution urges member states to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Effectively utilize Article 33 mechanisms including negotiation, mediation, and conciliation;<\/li>\n<li>Take measures to ensure the implementation of Security Council decisions on dispute resolution;<\/li>\n<li>Support and cooperate with the UN Secretary-General\u2019s preventive diplomacy efforts;<\/li>\n<li>Strengthen regional and subregional cooperation in mediation and peacebuilding;<\/li>\n<li>Promote inclusive peace processes, ensuring the meaningful participation of women and youth.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It further calls for the United Nations Secretariat to bolster its mediation capacity by maintaining a diverse and well-trained pool of experts and encourages regional organizations to share best practices and lessons learned.<\/p>\n<p>Importantly, the resolution mandates the UN Secretary-General to present concrete recommendations within a year to further reinforce existing mechanisms, and for the Security Council to convene an open debate to assess progress.<\/p>\n<p>The adoption of the resolution comes as Pakistan advocates for multilateral conflict resolution amid a complex and evolving global security landscape.
