His statement was met with applause from delegates, underlining the growing international frustration over the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

“It is with the hand of history on our shoulders that His Majesty’s Government intends to recognize the State of Palestine when the UN General Assembly gathers in September,” Lammy declared.

He added that the UK will proceed with recognition unless Israel halts its military campaign, eases the humanitarian blockade on Gaza, and shows genuine commitment to a political process leading to two sovereign states.

Highlighting recent actions by the UK government, Lammy noted the resumption of funding to UNRWA, suspension of arms exports to Israel, sanctions on violent settlers, halting of trade talks with the Israeli government, and punitive measures against far-right Israeli ministers accused of incitement.

Despite these efforts, he said, the situation on the ground has deteriorated further.
