{"id":84557,"date":"2026-01-17T16:17:05","date_gmt":"2026-01-17T16:17:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thediplomat.com.pk\/?p=84557"},"modified":"2026-01-24T06:55:07","modified_gmt":"2026-01-24T06:55:07","slug":"pakistan-urges-consistent-application-of-un-charter-to-rebuild-global-peace-architecture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thediplomat.com.pk\/index.php\/2026\/01\/17\/pakistan-urges-consistent-application-of-un-charter-to-rebuild-global-peace-architecture\/","title":{"rendered":"Pakistan urges consistent application of UN Charter to rebuild global peace architecture"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>UNITED NATIONS, Friday, January 16, 2026 (WNP): Pakistan on Friday called for a renewed and impartial application of the United Nations Charter as the international community marks its 80th anniversary, warning that selective approaches to peace and delayed justice undermine the credibility of the multilateral system.<\/p>\n<p>Delivering the opening remarks at a high-level discussion titled \u201cUN Charter at 80: Reimagining Conflict Prevention and Resolution,\u201d Pakistan\u2019s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, emphasized that sustainable peace can only be achieved through the consistent and principled implementation of the Charter\u2019s core values.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cAS WE COMMEMORATE EIGHTY YEARS OF THE UN CHARTER, LET US REAFFIRM A SIMPLE BUT PROFOUND TRUTH: PEACE CANNOT BE SELECTIVE, AND JUSTICE CANNOT BE DEFERRED INDEFINITELY,\u201d THE AMBASSADOR SAID, STRESSING THAT THE AUTHORITY OF THE CHARTER RESTS ON ITS IMPARTIAL APPLICATION, PARTICULARLY IN SITUATIONS WHERE PRINCIPLED MULTILATERAL ACTION IS MOST URGENTLY REQUIRED.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Ambassador Ahmad underlined that deviations from the Charter\u2019s principles\u2014especially in conflict prevention and resolution\u2014have contributed to growing instability and weakened trust in international institutions. He urged UN member states to recommit to the Charter\u2019s foundational norms, including respect for sovereignty, peaceful settlement of disputes, and collective responsibility for maintaining international peace and security.<\/p>\n<p>Calling for a forward-looking approach, the Pakistani envoy said the time had come to \u201creimagine conflict prevention and resolution by applying the Charter as it was intended \u2014 faithfully, courageously, and without exception.\u201d He highlighted the need for early diplomacy, inclusive dialogue, and equitable international responses to crises as essential elements of effective multilateralism.<\/p>\n<p>The high-level discussion was jointly hosted by the Permanent Mission of Pakistan to the United Nations and Global Peace Chain, a nonprofit organization focused on peace-building and youth empowerment.
