Trump credits Pakistan Army Chief for averting war with India, calls Asim Munir ‘extremely influential’ in de-escalation

Date:

WASHINGTON, Wednesday, June 18, 2025 : U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday credited Pakistan’s Army Chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, with playing a pivotal role in averting a full-scale war between Pakistan and India last month, calling his efforts “extremely influential” in de-escalating the crisis from the Pakistani side.

Speaking ahead of a luncheon meeting with Field Marshal Munir at the White House, President Trump underscored the gravity of the situation, noting that both nations possess nuclear capabilities.

“They were going at it, and both are nuclear countries,” Trump said. “This man [Asim Munir] was extremely influential in stopping it from the Pakistani side. I stopped a war between two major nations.”

The comments followed Trump’s phone conversation with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday. Trump reiterated that it was his intervention that helped defuse the tensions between the two South Asian neighbors, despite India’s assertion that the ceasefire was a result of direct communication between New Delhi and Islamabad.

“I stopped the war between India and Pakistan,” Trump said. “I love Pakistan, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi is a fantastic man. I spoke to him last night, and we will make a trade deal with Modi of India.”

Trump’s remarks come as diplomatic efforts continue behind the scenes to ensure long-term stability in the region, following last month’s near-conflict which had drawn global concern due to the risk of a nuclear confrontation.
