Zelenskyy warns of possible new Russian attacks, urges vigilance as winter strains Ukraine’s energy, infrastructure

Date:

KYIV, Thursday, January 8, 2026 (WNP): Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Thursday warned that Russia may be preparing another large-scale attack, urging citizens to remain alert to air raid warnings and to seek shelter when necessary, as harsh winter conditions continue to grip much of the country.

In a public address, Zelenskyy said Moscow was exploiting severe winter weather, which has worsened across several regions, exacerbating problems on roads and placing additional strain on critical utilities and energy infrastructure.

“ANOTHER MASSIVE RUSSIAN ATTACK MAY HAPPEN TONIGHT,” THE PRESIDENT SAID, EMPHASIZING THAT RUSSIA’S TACTICS HAVE NOT CHANGED. HE ACCUSED MOSCOW OF RELYING ON BALLISTIC MISSILE STRIKES AGAINST UKRAINE’S ENERGY SYSTEM RATHER THAN PURSUING MEANINGFUL DIPLOMATIC ENGAGEMENT.

Zelenskyy said Russia was “betting more on winter than on diplomacy,” arguing that continued attacks on civilian infrastructure underscored the need for sustained international pressure on Moscow and unwavering support for Kyiv. He stressed that progress toward ending the war would only be possible through coordinated international action, including closer cooperation with the United States.

Calling for solidarity, the Ukrainian leader thanked partner countries and supporters for recognizing the gravity of the situation and standing with Ukraine during one of the most challenging phases of the conflict.

Ukraine’s air defense forces remain on high alert as winter weather intensifies and energy facilities remain a primary target, raising concerns over heating, electricity supply, and civilian safety amid ongoing hostilities.
