BARCELONA: Prime Minister of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, on Saturday defended progressive values and calling for a more just economic model, while rejecting sustained criticism from right-wing and far-right groups.
Addressing a gathering, Sánchez said for years progressive identities had been targeted through labels and criticism, but asserted that “the time for shame is over,” declaring that those who oppose justice, equality and peace should instead be held accountable.
He emphasized the need to take pride in values such as peace, environmental protection, labor rights and gender equality, stating that these principles are essential for building inclusive and sustainable societies.
Highlighting global challenges, the Spanish premier underscored the importance of defending international law and promoting peace, while voicing concern over ongoing conflicts in regions including the Middle East and Eastern Europe. He reiterated calls for an end to war, stressing the need for dialogue and diplomacy.
Sánchez also pointed to economic priorities, advocating for a fairer distribution of prosperity and policies that benefit vulnerable segments of society while safeguarding the environment. He noted that progressive governments in various parts of the world are working toward such goals.
On migration, the prime minister reaffirmed Spain’s commitment to openness and inclusion, noting ongoing efforts to regularize hundreds of thousands of migrants. He stressed that Spain’s history is rooted in migration and rejected narratives promoting xenophobia.
Reiterating support for multilateralism, Sánchez highlighted the significance of global frameworks such as the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, calling for collective efforts to address global challenges.
Concluding his remarks, the Spanish leader urged continued commitment to peace, justice and international cooperation, emphasizing that progressive values remain central to addressing contemporary global issues.
