Trump vows to defend global Christian communities amid rising persecution in Nigeria

Date:

WASHINGTON, Thursday, November 6, 2025 : U.S. President Donald J. Trump has sounded the alarm over what he described as an “existential threat” to Christianity in Nigeria, calling on the United States to take decisive action against growing persecution of Christians across the world.

In a strongly worded statement, Trump said the U.S. “cannot stand by while such atrocities are happening” in Nigeria and other nations, emphasizing that protecting Christian communities globally is a moral imperative.

“CHRISTIANITY IS FACING AN EXISTENTIAL THREAT IN NIGERIA,” TRUMP DECLARED. “THE UNITED STATES CANNOT STAND BY WHILE SUCH ATROCITIES ARE HAPPENING THERE, AND IN NUMEROUS OTHER COUNTRIES. WE STAND READY, WILLING, AND ABLE TO SAVE OUR GREAT CHRISTIAN POPULATION AROUND THE WORLD.”

Trump’s remarks come amid mounting international concern over sectarian violence and attacks on Christian communities in parts of Africa. Human rights organizations have reported repeated incidents of killings, abductions, and church burnings in Nigeria, particularly in its northern and central regions.

Analysts say Trump’s statement underscores renewed calls for the international community — especially the United States — to intensify efforts to promote religious freedom and prevent violence based on faith.

The president, known for his outspoken defense of religious liberty during his tenure, has once again positioned himself as a global advocate for the protection of Christian minorities. His comments have sparked debate in diplomatic and religious circles about the role of the U.S. in addressing faith-based persecution worldwide.
