ISLAMABAD, Monday, August 18, 2025 : Pakistan and Ethiopia on Monday joined hands at the COMSTECH Secretariat in Islamabad to strengthen cooperation on climate action, showcasing South-South solidarity in addressing the global climate crisis.
The event, titled “Ethiopia–Pakistan Green Dialogue: Lessons from Ethiopia’s Green Legacy,” was jointly organized by the OIC Standing Committee on Scientific and Technological Cooperation (COMSTECH) and the Embassy of Ethiopia. It highlighted how collective efforts can confront deforestation, environmental degradation, and the mounting threats of climate change.
Opening with Qur’an recitation, national anthems, and a documentary on Ethiopia’s flagship Green Legacy Initiative, the dialogue set the stage for a high-level exchange. COMSTECH Coordinator General Prof. Dr. M. Iqbal Choudhary emphasized the importance of green diplomacy and collaborative strategies to achieve environmental sustainability.
Ethiopia’s Ambassador Dr. Jemal Beker Abdula shared his country’s success in mass tree plantation and eco-friendly practices through the Green Legacy campaign, calling it a global model for reforestation.
Senate Chairman Senator Yusuf Raza Gillani, attending as Chief Guest, said Pakistan faces severe climate risks despite contributing less than one percent to global emissions. He praised Ethiopia’s Green Legacy as a source of inspiration, noting that both countries can address shared challenges through cooperation in reforestation, water conservation, and sustainability.
Gillani also underlined Pakistan’s leadership in global climate diplomacy, citing its role in spearheading the Loss and Damage Fund at COP27 and active engagement in climate finance talks ahead of COP29. He proposed joint task forces, parliamentary exchanges, and research partnerships, while inviting Ethiopian lawmakers to participate in the upcoming Inter-Parliamentary Speakers’ Conference in Islamabad.
The event concluded with the Green Legacy Awards, a symbolic tree plantation ceremony, and a vibrant panel discussion on sustainable development and ecological restoration. A Q&A session and networking lunch further reinforced the resolve of both nations to deepen climate cooperation.
The Ethiopia–Pakistan Green Dialogue ended on a note of shared vision, with both countries reaffirming their commitment to advancing environmental diplomacy and building a climate-resilient future for generations to come.
