Pakistan, GGGI explore carbon market, green growth partnerships

Date:

ISLAMABAD, Monday, August 18, 2025 : Federal Minister for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination Dr. Musadik Malik on Monday held a meeting with Global Green Growth Initiative (GGGI) Country Representative Laura Jalasjoki to discuss expanding cooperation on climate action, including carbon markets and nature-based solutions.

Jalasjoki briefed the minister on GGGI’s global work, highlighting its support to 51 member countries in transitioning toward low-carbon, climate-resilient economies. She stressed the organization’s mission to advance inclusive green growth across diverse sectors.

Dr. Malik emphasized that Pakistan’s foremost priority is to implement strategies delivering both climate adaptation and mitigation, particularly in agriculture — the country’s most climate-sensitive sector.

“Green growth partnerships must focus on long-term sustainability and measurable impact,” he said, underscoring the importance of collaboration with international partners for a resilient economic transition.

The discussion also centered on carbon markets as a potential financing mechanism for sustainable development. Dr. Malik welcomed GGGI’s technical assistance in helping Pakistan access and benefit from such opportunities, while pointing out the need for international support to bridge viability gaps in carbon market mechanisms.

Reaffirming Pakistan’s commitment to expanding adaptation and mitigation capacity, the minister said the government is determined to accelerate the shift toward a green and resilient economy, with agriculture and nature-based solutions playing a central role.
