PM Carney says Canada–China relations at a ‘turning point’ after first leaders’ meeting in eight years

Date:

BUSAN, Friday, October 31, 2025 : Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada is at a “turning point” in its relationship with China, following his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the APEC Summit — the first official engagement between the two countries’ leaders in eight years.

Speaking to the media after the meeting, Carney described the talks as “constructive and forward-looking,” emphasizing a renewed commitment to rebuild ties between Ottawa and Beijing.

“THIS IS A TURNING POINT IN OUR RELATIONSHIP,” THE PRIME MINISTER SAID. “BOTH SIDES RECOGNIZE THE IMPORTANCE OF PRAGMATIC ENGAGEMENT AND COOPERATION IN ADDRESSING GLOBAL AND BILATERAL CHALLENGES.”

He also confirmed that during the meeting, President Xi extended an invitation to him for a state visit to China — a move seen as a major step toward normalizing relations between the two nations.

Observers noted that the encounter marks a thaw in Canada–China relations, which had been strained over trade and diplomatic issues in recent years. The renewed dialogue, analysts say, could open doors for enhanced cooperation in trade, clean technology, and climate action.
