UNITED NATIONS, Friday, January 16, 2026 (WNP): Pakistan has reaffirmed its strong commitment to inclusive and effective multilateralism, emphasizing the central role of the United Nations General Assembly in the global governance architecture, as discussions began on the annual report of the UN Security Council for 2025.

Addressing an Informal Meeting of the General Assembly, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, said that as an elected member of the Security Council, Pakistan views the General Assembly as its “core constituency.” He underscored that Pakistan’s engagement in the Council is guided by a firm adherence to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter.

“THIS IS PAKISTAN’S EIGHTH TERM ON THE SECURITY COUNCIL, AND ACROSS THESE TENURES WE HAVE REMAINED COMMITTED TO RESPECT FOR INTERNATIONAL LAW, THE PEACEFUL SETTLEMENT OF DISPUTES, AND THE STRENGTHENING OF MULTILATERAL COOPERATION,” THE AMBASSADOR SAID.

Ambassador Asim Iftikhar highlighted Pakistan’s consistent efforts to enhance the transparency and effectiveness of the Security Council’s work. He noted that Pakistan has actively supported improvements in the Council’s working methods and has advocated for greater responsiveness to the concerns and priorities of the wider UN membership.

Stressing the importance of accountability and inclusivity, he said that a more transparent and representative Security Council is essential for maintaining the credibility and legitimacy of the United Nations, particularly at a time of growing global challenges and complex geopolitical dynamics.

The remarks were made during the General Assembly’s consideration of the Security Council’s annual report for 2025, a process aimed at strengthening institutional oversight and fostering closer interaction between the Council and the broader UN membership.
