KARACHI: World Bank Group President Ajay Pal Singh Banga on Wednesday spoke movingly about his personal and ancestral ties to Pakistan, recalling an emotional visit to his family’s ancestral village in Khushab and describing the warmth and hospitality he received as deeply touching.

Speaking during his engagements in Sindh, Banga said his visit to Khushab was a profoundly meaningful experience, allowing him to reconnect with his roots and reflect on the shared history and cultural bonds of the region. He noted that the affection and respect shown by local residents left a lasting impression on him.

“I WAS OVERWHELMED BY THE LOVE AND WARMTH OF THE PEOPLE,” BANGA SAID, ADDING THAT SUCH MOMENTS UNDERSCORE THE ENDURING HUMAN CONNECTIONS THAT TRANSCEND BORDERS.

During the visit, the World Bank chief also paid respects at a historic gurdwara built by his grandfather, describing it as a deeply personal moment that linked his family’s past with the present. He said the visit reinforced the importance of preserving shared heritage and places of worship that symbolize coexistence and mutual respect.

Banga’s remarks were widely seen as highlighting the cultural and historical ties between communities in South Asia, as well as the role of people-to-people connections in fostering understanding and goodwill. His reflections resonated strongly at a time when dialogue, inclusivity and respect for shared heritage are increasingly emphasized in regional and global discourse.

The World Bank president’s visit to Pakistan is focused on development cooperation, economic reform and social inclusion, but his personal reflections added a human dimension to the trip, drawing attention to the shared histories that continue to bind the peoples of the region.
