ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday announced that a peace agreement between the United States and the Iran had been reached following intensive negotiations, with both sides agreeing to an immediate and permanent cessation of military operations on all fronts, including in Lebanon.
In a statement, the prime minister said the official signing ceremony of the agreement would take place in Switzerland on June 19.
He congratulated both countries for their commitment to pursuing a diplomatic solution to the conflict and praised their willingness to engage in dialogue aimed at restoring regional peace and stability.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also expressed appreciation to the leadership of Qatar for its support in the mediation process, describing its contribution as instrumental in helping the parties reach an agreement.
He further acknowledged the role played by the leadership of Saudi Arabia and Türkiye, thanking them for what he termed their significant contributions to the diplomatic efforts that culminated in the accord.
According to the prime minister, mediators will facilitate a series of meetings during the week ahead to prepare for implementation of the agreement. These discussions will focus on technical arrangements and lay the groundwork for the formal signing ceremony.
Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump announced the immediate authorization of toll-free navigation through the Strait of Hormuz and the removal of the United States naval blockade, following the conclusion of the agreement.
In a statement, Trump said the deal with Iran had been completed and congratulated all parties involved in the negotiations. He said the reopening of the strategic waterway would allow the resumption of unrestricted maritime traffic and energy shipments.
Separately, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on state television that there was no division between diplomacy and national security efforts, describing them as complementary components of Iran’s strategy.
He said Iran had achieved a “strategic victory” after enduring two major conflicts and disclosed that negotiations, led by parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf with support from the Foreign Ministry and other institutions, were approaching their final stage.
Araghchi said the process had produced a 14-clause Memorandum of Understanding for ending the conflict and ensuring the gains achieved through the negotiations were preserved.
He also warned that opponents of the agreement, particularly Israel, could attempt to undermine the process and urged restraint in discussing sensitive details publicly in order to maintain stability and support the successful conclusion of the final agreement.
The announcements mark a major diplomatic breakthrough in efforts to reduce tensions in the Middle East and restore stability to one of the world’s most strategically important regions.
