António Guterres urges continued US–Iran dialogue despite no deal at Islamabad Talks

Date:

UNITED NATIONS: United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has called for sustained diplomatic engagement between the United States and Iran, stressing the need to build on discussions held during the Islamabad Talks despite the absence of a final agreement.

While the high-level negotiations in Islamabad concluded without a breakthrough, the UN chief emphasized that the very fact both sides engaged directly underscored the seriousness of their commitment to dialogue.

Guterres urged both parties to continue talks in a constructive spirit, calling on them to “seize this diplomatic opportunity” and engage in good faith toward a comprehensive and lasting agreement aimed at de-escalation and prevention of further hostilities.

He reiterated that there is no viable alternative to peaceful resolution of disputes, emphasizing diplomacy as the only sustainable path to stability.

The Islamabad Talks marked the first direct high-level engagement between Washington and Tehran in decades, even as differences prevented an immediate agreement, leaving the door open for continued negotiations.
