UNICEF Pakistan highlights impact of water scarcity on girls’ education, future

Date:

ISLAMABAD: UNICEF Pakistan has highlighted the critical link between access to safe water and girls’ education, sharing a powerful account of how water scarcity continues to affect opportunities for young girls across the country.

In a video message, youth advocate Zunaira from Balochistan underscored that millions of girls spend hours each day collecting water, often at the cost of their education, playtime, and personal development.

She noted that in many parts of Pakistan, especially in remote areas, girls are forced to walk long distances to fetch water, preventing them from attending school regularly. Even when enrolled, the lack of water and sanitation facilities in schools contributes significantly to dropout rates, particularly among adolescent girls.

The message emphasized that the water crisis extends beyond access, impacting the potential, voices, and contributions of women and girls in society.

Describing access to safe water as a fundamental human need rather than a privilege, UNICEF Pakistan called for collective action to ensure equitable access for all communities.

The organization also urged young people to raise awareness and advocate for sustainable solutions, stressing that improved water access is directly linked to gender equality and empowerment in Pakistan.
