Pakistan, WFP to enhance climate-resilient efforts to combat malnutrition, food insecurity

Date:

ISLAMABAD, Friday, May 30, 2025 : The Government of Pakistan and the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) have agreed to deepen cooperation on climate-resilient initiatives aimed at addressing malnutrition and food insecurity in the country’s most vulnerable regions.

The agreement was reached during a meeting between Federal Minister for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, Dr. Musadik Malik, and WFP Country Director Coco Ushiyama in Islamabad on Friday.

The discussions focused on Pakistan’s five-year cooperation framework with the WFP, with particular attention to tackling child stunting—an issue increasingly aggravated by the “4Cs”: climate change, conflict, the economic fallout from COVID-19, and governance challenges.

Minister Malik emphasized the urgency of implementing proactive, outcome-driven programs that merge climate adaptation strategies with efforts to improve nutrition.

“Our partnership must deliver tangible climate benefits to communities, particularly in regions grappling with chronic food insecurity,” he said.

Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to integrating climate resilience into Pakistan’s national development agenda to ensure sustainable food security and better health outcomes for at-risk populations.

The enhanced collaboration seeks to combine WFP’s humanitarian expertise with Pakistan’s climate policy priorities to mitigate the impact of environmental shocks on food systems and livelihoods.

The meeting signals a key step toward aligning Pakistan’s climate and nutrition strategies, with more details on joint initiatives expected to be announced in the near future.
