Canada, Philippines to deepen trade, defence ties: PM Mark Carney

Date:

KUALA LUMPUR, Sunday, October 26, 2025 : Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has reaffirmed Canada’s commitment to deepening its partnership with the Philippines, emphasizing shared goals in trade, security, and people-to-people ties.

IN A STATEMENT ISSUED AHEAD OF PLANNED HIGH-LEVEL TALKS ON HIS SOCIAL MEDIA ACCOUNT ‘X’, PRIME MINISTER CARNEY NOTED THAT CANADA AND THE PHILIPPINES “SHARE A CLOSE RELATIONSHIP — A BOND STRENGTHENED BY THE MORE THAN ONE MILLION FILIPINOS WHO CALL CANADA HOME.”

He said both countries are actively pursuing negotiations on a free trade agreement aimed at boosting economic growth, expanding market access, and creating new opportunities for workers and businesses in both nations.

Prime Minister Carney added that he and Philippine President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. are also focused on enhancing defence cooperation, including maritime security and regional stability initiatives.

“Canada stands with the Philippines as a trusted partner in advancing shared prosperity, security, and democratic values across the Indo-Pacific,” Carney said, expressing optimism that the strengthened partnership would open a new chapter in bilateral relations.
